Tour of the Blanca Wetlands

Trip leaders: Jill Lucero, BLM Biologist

The Wetlands are a part of a wetlands network and are making a comeback through the efforts of the Bureau of Land Management and its many partners. Ponds, marshes, playas, wet meadows, and uplands intermingle at Blanca Wetlands to provide rich and diverse habitats for wildlife – and a haven for people.

Long ago, a network of playa lakes, ponds, marshes and wet meadows shimmered in the desert scrub of the San Luis Valley. Today, many of the wetlands are dry due to a lower ground water table and decreased rain and snow runoff from the mountains. This complex set of playa lakes have been designated an Area of Critical Environmental Concern, or an ACEC. This BLM designation is based on an area’s unique, rare or sensitive resources. Blanca was designated an ACEC specifically for its recreation and wetland values, including playa and marsh habitats containing large populations of water birds, amphibians, macroinvertebrates, and 18 threatened, endangered, and sensitive species.

With more than 200 ponds, marshes and playas, Blanca Wetlands Recreation Area provides excellent habitat for large numbers of waterfowl. A complex trail system winds through the area, creating a wonderful wildlife viewing experience for visitors. In addition, a waterfowl-viewing boardwalk offers exceptional bird watching opportunities. Bring your binoculars!

This is a half-day tour; we will wrap up around 11:30 AM or 12:00 noon and you are on your own for lunch. The cost of the tour is $10.00 for members, $5.00 for students, and $20.00 for nonmembers.
