Subject: The origin of the Crestone Crater is unknown.
Some believe it is an impact by a meteorite since a meteorite was witnessed coming over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the 1920s. It was studied in the 1960s by Smithsonian Institute geologist and re-evaluated this spring by students from Colorado School of Mines. They used geophysical techniques to image the subsurface.
Where and when to meet: Baca Grande POA office parking lot, 9 AM The Baca Grande POA office is on Road T (the road to Crestone) and is east of the golf course and 2.5 miles west of Crestone
Trip ends: Noon Cost of trip: members: $15, non-members: $20, students/children: $5 Maximum number of trip of attendees: 30
What will be seen: A well preserved crater in a sand deposit.
Lunch: No lunch will be provided, but Crestone has several excellent restaurants. Level of physical activity: Getting to the crate involves an easy to moderate one mile hike.
What to bring: Sunscreen, comfortable hiking shoes, be prepared for windy or rainy weather. Bathroom facilities: None. Transportation: Self transportation.
